Ingrown Toenails

Expert care for painful, infected, or recurring ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenails are a common foot problem and can be
uncomfortable or painful if left untreated. They occur when
the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin,
which can lead to redness, swelling and, in some cases,
infection.

Common Causes of Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can develop for several reasons, including:

  • Cutting toenails incorrectly, tight or ill-fitting footwear, socks or tights

  • Previous injury or trauma to the toe

  • Naturally curved nails

  • Thickened or fungal nails

Symptoms to Look Out For

You may notice:

  • Pain or tenderness along the edge of the nail

  • Redness and swelling around the toe

  • Fluid or discharge if infection is present

  • Overgrowth of skin around the nail

  • Discomfort when wearing shoes or walking

In milder cases, ingrown toenails can often be managed with
professional foot care and advice on nail cutting and
footwear. However, if the problem is persistent or keeps
returning, a more permanent solution such as nail surgery
may be recommended
