Fungal Nail Testing
A quick in-clinic test to find out if a nail problem is fungal.
Thickened, discoloured or damaged nails are often assumed to be fungal, but similar changes can have other causes. Looking at the nail alone does not always provide a clear answer.
At Alexandras Podiatry Care, we can test a small nail sample during your appointment. The result is available in around five minutes, helping your podiatrist explain the most appropriate next step.
-
Results available during your appointment
-
Only a small nail sample is needed
-
Supports a clearer, more targeted treatment plan
-
Carried out by a fully qualified, HCPC-registered podiatrist
This can be particularly useful if you have already tried treating the nail at home, want an answer more quickly than waiting for for a GP appointment, or would like more certainty before committing to a longer course of treatment.
What happens during the test appointment?
Your podiatrist will assess the affected nail and ask about any changes you have noticed.
A small nail sample is then collected, prepared and tested in the clinic. The test checks for common dermatophytes, which are fungi associated with many fungal nail infections.

What happens after the test?
If the test is positive, your podiatrist will explain the result and discuss the treatment options that may be suitable for you.
If the test is negative, your podiatrist will consider the appearance and condition of the nail and advise whether another cause or further assessment should be considered.
A fungal nail test can be done in our Penzance clinic or during a home foot care visit.
